Discovery Exercise: Information Literacy

Discovery Exercise:  Information Literacy

I watched the YouTube video on Information Literacy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWzigkpR7yg    and the following is my summary of the important points.

Data smog is where too much information just blinds us and is of no help to anyone. Being information literate gives us the skills to cope with data smog. (1)

Information literacy ia the ability to articulate a problem to be investigated, locate and assemble information, scrutinize gathered resources, process and apply information towards a solution and contemplate the effectiveness of the entire process.

The DISCOVER method of Information Literacy requires a person to
  • DEFINE what you are looking for
  • INQUIRE into a variety of resources, online and traditional format
  • SEARCH using different search engines
  • COLLECT websites for future consideration
  • ORGANISE the information based on its relevance
  • VERIFY the authors and information accuracy and reliability
  • EXPRESS your findings
  • REFLECT on results, up to date, broaden or narrow search (2)
Identify 5 W's of the search.  What, Why, Who, Where and When. Try to answer these questions within your search.

  1. Well done on everything here Josephine. You have summarised very well using the important points from the video. Using the acronym "DISCOVERY" makes it easy to remember the systematical approach to good research. You have also cited the references you have used which is highly important in the process.
