Camellias are native to south-east Asia, Assam, Burma, China, Japan, Laos and Vietnam.  Almost 300 species have been recorded, the majority occurring naturally in China, Japan and Vietnam.  The spread of Camellias to the West is linked to the desire to produce tea in England and Europe.  Camellia Japonica arrived in England 1759. However this Camellia species was not suitable for tea drinking.
